Send and receive virtual messages-in-a-bottle (iPhone/iPod Touch)
OK, here’s an incredibly cool $0.99 app for the iPhone/iPod Touch: Distant Shore, by the same folks that brought you one of my personal relaxation favorites, Koi Pond. Walk along the beach (you can see and hear your footsteps as you go) and pick up shells. Collect 5 shells to earn an empty bottle, which you can then use to send a message out to sea.
Now here’s the coolest part: Your message-in-a-bottle will eventually wash up on someone else’s shore, and other players’ messages will wash up on yours. The more you send, the more you’ll get. You can even respond to messages and send them back, making new bottle pen pals!
Also features a soothing ocean soundtrack and adorable mail-turtle.

If you have an iPhone or iPod Touch, here are some of this week’s top FREE day-improving apps (all available at the App Store). Feel free to suggest others — these just caught our eye (Note: We didn’t include links to the actual apps because not everybody has or wants iTunes. A quick search on the titles, though, and you’re in business!):
- Beatbox Free (release your inner drummer)
- Binaural Beats (music and sound specially designed for sleep, relaxation, headache relief, memory improvement, etc.)
- Fart for Free (we know, but it’s among the most popular apps ever…seriously funny)
- If Found, Please… (displays your contact information–it may not make today better, but it could definitely help out in the future)
- Stars (move around the night sky to identify your favorite constellations)
- Quick Voice Recorder (turns your iPhone or iPod Touch into a neato note-taking device–requires a headset)
- Remote (lets you control the music on your computer or Apple TV from your iPod Touch or iPhone)
